A group of grassroots criminal justice advocates called on Governor Greg Abbott to call a special session to address air conditioning in Texas prisons, after reports of several inmates dying in the midst of drastic heat.

Tommy McCullough, died in June; his sister, Kristie Williams, spoke at Tuesday's rally.

"The night before he passed, he had a phone conversation with a friend of his," Williams said. "And he told her it is so hot, he was so exhausted, he was having trouble breathing. And that they were barely getting any kind of water at all. There was no air conditioning, just the fans, and those fans just circulate hot air."
