Balancing a career as a pro athlete with his medical career has never been easy — “when I’m there, I’m there 100 per cent,” Duvernay-Tardif says of his time with the team — but it was an essential step in his plans to dedicate his life to public health.Duvernay-Tardif vividly recalls the early skepticism about his ability to carry out his dual career path plans while doing pre-draft visits in 2014.
“Coach Reid, who was my coach in Kansas City and is probably one of the all-time coaches in the NFL, I remember he told me, ‘If you’re here today, even if you have medicine, it’s because you love football. And I want to coach people who love football,’ ” Duvernay-Tardif says. “He was really helpful in allowing me to balance both.”
While he won’t commit to retiring just yet — “if the phone rings in October, and I’m still in shape, I might go. But I think my priority needs to be this” — the next stage of his career will see Duvernay-Tardif double-down on health care., detailing his experiences both on the field and in the medical field. He also started the Laurent Duvernay-Tardif Foundation, which promotes the importance of physical activity in youth education and programs.
“I think there’s a lot of synergy between what I’m trying to accomplish in the medical field and this partnership with Clarins,” he says. “Skin care, in a way, is a form of health. And, after going through the pandemic, I would say also a form of mental health.
