While complimentary of Class AAA Sugar Land after his fourth rehab start Sunday, Lance McCullers Jr. said he’d prefer his next appearance come with the Astros.SUGAR LAND — Results are rarely scrutinized during minor league rehab assignments. During his first three appearances, Lance McCullers Jr. allowed five earned runs across 8 1/3 innings. Few within the Astros organization batted an eye. More emphasis is placed on health or, in McCullers’ case, the shape, movement and spin of his pitches.
McCullers is not a man who relies on overwhelming velocity — weak contact and elite breaking pitches form his foundation — but a 2.7 mph decline on his two-seam fastball might raise concern. The Astros now must decide how much, if at all.Major league pitchers are afforded a 30-day maximum on a minor league rehab assignment. McCullers’ first four starts have spanned 17 days, meaning there is room on his calendar for at least one more.
“It is what it is,” McCullers said of the velocity. “I’ve been working on some shape issues, I would say. I haven’t been super happy with the shapes of my two-seam, and today they were a lot better. If I can kind of build off of the shapes and maybe add as I go, I think I’ll be happy with that.” McCullers said he threw more fastballs than he ever would during his first look at Round Rock’s order. He eschewed the two-seamer almost altogether during his second and third looks.
