Quarterback Lamar Jackson’s contract stalemate with the Baltimore Ravens ended Thursday, just hours ahead of the opening round of the NFL draft. The former league MVP agreed to a five-year extension with the Ravens, the team confirmed.
. But deals signed by other standout quarterbacks since then were not fully guaranteed, and the Ravens appeared to be balking at such a contract.. He would have made about $32.4 million for the 2023 season if he had played under the terms of his franchise-player deal.Instead, he supplants Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts as the league’s top-paid player, based on the average annual value of his deal. Hurts justwith the Eagles that includes $179.3 million in guaranteed money.
Jackson’s contract becomes the new target for fellow star quarterbacks Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals and Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers, who are eligible to sign extensions this offseason.Jackson has spent his entire five-year NFL career with the Ravens and is a two-time Pro Bowl selection. He was named the league’s MVP in his first full season as an NFL starter in 2019.
Instead, the Ravens used the nonexclusive version of the tag, with the lower salary associated with it. That left Jackson eligible to sign an offer sheet with another team. The Ravens could have retained Jackson by matching such an offer sheet. Or they could have allowed him to leave and would have received two first-round draft choices from his new team as compensation.
Jackson never signed such an offer sheet. He made his trade request public in late March, just as Ravens Coach John Harbaugh was beginning to address reporters at the annual league meeting in Phoenix, and said he had issued the request March 2.
