Bondy girls, Thompson boys claim district track and field crowns
Bondy pole vaulter Kenzie Fernandez collides with the bar in attempting to clear 6 feet, 5 inches Wednesday night. She still captured the district title at 6-0.In need of a noteworthy effort in the field events to cement the intermediate school district championship, Bondy’s eighth-grade girls track and field team received it by capturing first place in three of the six events and a 1-2 finish in two of them.
After Monday’s first day of competition that was reserved for the running events, Beverly Hills was the only school that was still within shouting distance of the Bondy ladies. But the Lady Patriots blew away the Bears in the field events, outscoring them 70-8. Jennifer Ortiz won the discus title with a heave of 68 feet, 9 inches, nipping Valerie Rodriguez of South Houston Intermediate and her effort of 68 feet, 5 inches.
Jackson’s Rockeria Rasberry, fresh from an outstanding effort on Monday, continued her strong performances by winning the long jump at 13 feet, 6½ inches. In the shot put, Hennesy Pena of San Jacinto secured first place with a toss of 30 feet, 1 inch. Jaylin Martinez of Queens and Lesley Diaz of South Houston threw the sphere just over 29 feet.
All of Park View’s came from individuals. Alejandro Cantu won the 200-meter dash in 24.50 seconds, Brody Beauchamp claimed the 100-meter hurdles in 17.62 seconds and Jayden Wilson was tops in the 300-meter hurdles.
