Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) is no longer a registered Democrat. But that doesn't make her a conservative.
The swing-state senator announced late last week that she has registered as an independent, leaving the Democratic Party. However, like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Angus King , she will caucus with Democrats.
For Sinema, switching from Democratic to independent seems to be about self-preservation. It is unclear if she plans to run for reelection in 2024, but if she does, being an independent gives her a boost. On top of this, while Sinema has a reputation as a moderate Democrat, she has many lousy political views — and is anything but moderate on social issues.
