My first graduation in Chicago marked both a major change in the trajectory of my arts career and the future of our city’s arts community. As I was among the first graduating class at The Chicago High School for the Arts in 2013, I had the unique opportunity of experiencing Chicago’s first public arts high school during its beginnings. After my family moved to Hyde Park during my junior year, I transferred to ChiArts with a love of singing and experience with set building.
During my time working in theater in Chicago, I learned a lot about trusting myself and the tools I’d gained throughout my education. I learned that my excellence won’t look like anyone else’s, and I am committed to my own personal craft and to telling the story in whatever way that I best know how to tell it — always approaching my work with my own vessel as my guide.
My time in Chicago theater motivated me to become a lifelong learner, continuing to pursue self-mastery, but it also inspired me to learn how to couple that pursuit of knowledge and growth with sustainability and ease. I have the Chicago grit mentality of “never stop, give everything you’ve got,” but I’m now working on trusting myself and my capabilities enough to say, “I know I can do this because I can, and I don’t need to prove myself to anyone.
