Russian forces launched Iranian-made kamikaze drones to attack Ukraine’s capital city of Kyiv, where residents had largely returned to their daily lives months ago when the focus of the war moved east.
Russia has pummeled a swath of Ukrainian cities this week, upping its bombardment in areas of the country that are removed from the front lines of the war. Western officials have accused Russia of targeting civilian infrastructure during this recent bombing campaign.
The United States warned in recent months that Russia had sought to buy, and have ultimately purchased, Iranian drones to supplement their rapidly depleting stockpiles.The country's widespread attacks on Ukraine follow an explosion that damaged the Kerch Bridge, which is the only bridge that connects Russia and Crimea, which it annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
“In the past few days, Russia has increased their strikes on civilian infrastructure, power generation, and dams. Russia has deliberately struck civilian infrastructure with the purpose of harming civilians. They have targeted the elderly, the women, and the children of Ukraine,” he explained. “Indiscriminate and deliberate attacks on civilian targets is a war crime in the international rules of war.
