Kwity Paye flew under the radar in his rookie season but has already started Year 2 with a bang. _RyanFowler_ on how Paye is being a key cog on the Colts' defense and has a bright future ahead. ColtsNation | ForTheShoe

flew under the radar in his rookie season. The 21st overall pick to a small market like Indianapolis, Paye’s first taste of NFL action last fall came and went without anyone batting an eye despite 15 starts. An impressively statured athlete with the versatility to slide up and down the defensive line, year two has introduced a brand new beast, and Paye wasted no time in asserting himself in 2022.

While Week 1 as a whole for the Indianapolis Colts didn’t go as planned—a tie with the Houston Texans was the blandest way to kick off the year as physically possible—Paye was dominant, amassing a pair of sacks, two TFLs, and four total pressures. An overpowering blend of power and speed, Paye looked completely unblockable at times using his 261-pound frame to overwhelm opposing offensive linemen.

It’s an early sign of improvement from Paye that often goes overlooked within the first few years of a player’s career—especially as a Day 1 pick. Player development is key, and for someone whose best football remains down the road, totaling his two sacks in a three-play span highlighted the true potential he touts along the defensive trenches. It’s a massive positive for a Colts defense that finished seventh-worst in sacks recorded last fall .

A dive into Paye’s background makes his rise to becoming a prominent player within the Colts’ defense that much more impressive. The Liberian Civil War split up Kwity Paye, his brother Komotay Koffie, and their father Leroy for 25 years. While Paye made the move to the United States as a ninth-month-old child with his mother, Koffie hadn’t met his dad until the summer of 2022, and he and Paye have just now rekindled their relationship some 5,700 miles away from their home country.

After a start to his sophomore campaign that couldn’t have gone much better, Paye’s improvement alongside DeForest Buckner and in front of Shaquille Leonard has introduced a trio of tier-one athletes for head coach Frank Reich to lean on. Four sacks in his rookie season was a small taste of what’s to come, and after recording multiple splash plays against Houston on Sunday, Paye’s path to stardom is a linear one as he approaches Week 2.
