The riveting true story is a chilling indictment of the systemic slaughter, abuse and mistreatment of members of the Osage tribe in early 1920s Oklahoma.

The film wouldn’t exist without the meticulous research of New Yorker journalist David Grann for his 2017 book, “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI.” It recounts the murders or suspicious deaths of at least 24 members of the Osage tribe in the early 1920s in Oklahoma, as well as the efforts of the newly formed FBI to seek justice.

The FBI narrative in the book is meandering — an accurate account but not as interesting as the chapters focused on the Osage community — and, despite the villains being white, these passages have white savior underpinnings.

The filmmakers said the shift was largely driven from collaboration with the Osage Nation. Scorsese says the movie became not a whodunit but 'a who-didn’t-do-it.”

Nothing has been more anticipated at this year’s Cannes than this high-budget premiere. The red carpet drew a wide spectrum of stars, including actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro. Apple CEO Tim Cook also attended.
