After the massacre at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, some Republican lawmakers pushed for more employees to carry guns in schools.

Keller ISD school board members Joni Smith , Charles Randklev , and Sandi Walker will be among those considering a new policy allowing certain employees to carry weapons on campus.Keller teachers and other school employees could be authorized to carry guns on campuses should trustees approve a new policy Monday night.

After the massacre at Robb Elementary – Texas’ deadliest school shooting – some Republican lawmakers pushed for more employees to carry guns in schools. Proponents of the idea often say their support is based on the belief that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. “Should the board adopt the policy changes as presented in the agenda, these updates will allow district administrators and the board to continue working through available security options and determine what efforts would be most effective for the safety of our schools,” district spokesman Bryce Nieman said.that 280 districts reported using the guardian program. Updated numbers will be available next year, director Kathy Martinez-Prather said.

“We’ve also seen districts who also have their own ISD police department, as well as school marshals, incorporate that plan into their safety and security strategies,” she said. “We have seen more districts be more forward-facing and open about that,” she said. “From the perspective of some districts, the mindset is, it’s a way of deterring potential threat actors.”
