It's not easy to spin an advice column into an eight-episode TV show. Luckily, Kathryn Hahn is a perfect match for author Cheryl Strayed’s powerful work.

—it manages to build a stronger story by focusing on Strayed herself, from the death of her mother in flashbacks to her becoming Sugar in the present day.

In the present-day storyline, Clare struggles with her home and work life. On the homefront, she’s got issues with Danny and her daughter Frankie , named after Clare’s mother —though Clare’s daughter now prefers going by “Rae” because it’s a slight jab at her mother.

Kathryn Hahn can do no wrong, and as Clare, she once again displays a breadth of tenderness, wit, and humanity. But don’t be fooled—she’s not the only lead star of the series., starring as the younger version of Clare, goes above and beyond in the flashback sequences of the show. There were times where Pidgeon's line-readings were so close to Hahn’s that, had I closed my eyes and listened to the young actress speak, I would’ve thought it was Hahn herself delivering the line.
