'Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,' opening May 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, surveys the legendary designer's 65-year career
Lagerfeld at work on a haute couture collection at Chanel’s Paris studio, March 1984.Over the course of his 65-year career in fashion, the late designer Karl Lagerfeld became as famous as the fashion houses he worked for, including Chanel, Chloé and Fendi. Known for his uniform of starched white collar, slim black suit, powdered white ponytail and fingerless biker gloves, as well as for his biting wit and extravagant, theatrical runway shows, Lagerfeld rarely shunned attention.
Yet he was famously outspoken about how much he abhorred the idea of having a museum retrospective while he was alive. “I’m not in the habit of analyzing or intellectualizing my work,” he told Andrew Bolton, head curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, in 2005. “I leave that to the professionals.” Now, four years after the designer’s death, Mr. Bolton has organized “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” opening May 5 at the Costume Institute.
