County officials said the group didn't supply necessary documents, and the park could not handle such a large number of expected attendees.
“We have pleaded with county leaders to reconsider this decision and they are not willing to meet with us,” Juneteenth New Jersey’s statement read.
Juneteenth New Jersey said it was given 10 days to pay the county $35,000 for a park fee and for security for the event. After the group was unable to pay by the deadline of 12 p.m. on Wednesday, the celebration was cancelled. Leaders from Juneteenth New Jersey said they took further steps, including meeting with county officials, to try to get approval but that their efforts were unsuccessful.
