A Cleveland man who spent nearly three decades behind bars for a murder he always maintained he didn’t commit was declared wrongfully imprisoned.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A Cleveland man who spent nearly three decades behind bars for a murder he always maintained he didn’t commit was declared wrongfully imprisoned on Monday.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost’s office and Jackson’s attorneys from the law firm of Friedman, Gilbert and Gerhardstein filed a joint motion on Monday, agreeing that Jackson was wrongfully imprisoned. Jackson maintained his innocence and took the case to trial, where the same witnesses accused him of the murder. Jurors convicted Jackson, and he was sentenced to life in prison.

Jackson’s attorneys said the reports showed that one of the detectives, William Nolan, lied and fabricated evidence when he testified during a pretrial hearing that he and another detective, Frank Gedeon, showed Lacey a full photo lineup of Jackson and several other people, and Lacey picked Jackson’s photo. Then-Judge Carl Character stopped the hearing because neither prosecutors nor defense attorneys had the photographs Nolan said he used.
