Roy James Holden was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to charges that he fatally stabbed 83-year-old Betty Thomas. In 2019, Holden answered a call to Thomas’s home to help her with her Spectrum phone line. Prosecutors say he returned the next day while off-duty, in a company van and in uniform, and robbed and killed Thomas.
In June, a Dallas County jury ordered Charter Communications, the parent company of Spectrum and Spectrum News 1, to pay the victim's family more than seven-billion dollars in punitive damages. This week, a judge accepted a request by the victim's family and reduced that amount to a little more than one-billion dollars to make it harder to appeal.
Following the ruling, however, Charter Communications said it will still appeal adding "the responsibility for this horrible act rests solely with Mr. Holden, who was not on duty." The company statement goes on to say "the law in Texas and the facts presented at trial clearly show this crime was not foreseeable and the plaintiffs' claims of wrongdoing by Charter are categorically false.
