We chat with BabylonMovie stars lijunli & Jovan Adepo about their musical moments, how they prepared for the film, and what made it hard not to fall off the stage:
Babylon, the new project from Whiplash, La La Land, and First Man director Damien Chazelle, is the filmmaker's biggest and boldest work yet. The sprawling epic spans decades, offers spectacle on a near-unbelievable scale, and explores the heartbreaking costs of passion, love, and changing times.
Jovan Adepo: Musically, yes. I like how it sounded, "You played trumpet back in the day," because then it sounds real. I played trumpet briefly, and I'm talking a month tops in middle school. Once you're learning all of the different musical notes and stuff, and all the patterns and switches, I was like, "Oh, no, that's enough for me," and I went into sports.
And you got your start in theater as well, I believe. When we meet Lady Fay, she's walking on stage, and you do this amazing song. How easy was it for you to relate to that character given that you've also been a chameleon and done all these different things? Both of you got the unique opportunity to be in that party scene from a little bit of a distance. How was it to be a part of such a production, and also have your own little space and get to witness it rather than run around in it?
