A journey to the FCS ranks helped Westin Elliott develop as a QB. Now, he's looking for his NFL opportunity. Crissy_Froyd on what Elliott learned at Merrimack, how he's grown through adversity, how he's training now & more. FrontOffice33 | NFLDraft
Westin Elliott was in close contention in a quarterback competition at Louisiana Tech when he tested positive for COVID-19 on the last Friday of fall camp. That ultimately prevented him from playing in the first couple weeks of the season and set him back to a point of waiting for an opportunity that would never come.“We were supposed to play Baylor Week 1 and the Baylor game got canceled,” Elliott said.
Difficulty struck early on in his time with the Warriors, three weeks into the 2021 season to be exact. Elliott had taken a facemask to the back of his right hand, his throwing hand, which produced a tennis ball-sized infection from a small cut. He was hospitalized by that Sunday night, had to undergo surgery, and needed eight stitches in the back of his hand before all was said and done.
“I think depth is the only real difference between Group of Five teams and FCS teams. I’ve played in both the FBS and the FCS and there are definitely guys who played on that field who could have played against higher-level competition,” Elliott said. “They’re just a little more spread out at the FCS level. I think for sure they’re overlooked because you hear all the time ‘the competition he played wasn’t as good.’ But if you go turn on the film, you see flashes all over the field.
There were some stark differences between the LA Tech system he spent time as a backup in and the one he started in at Merrimack, which has further added to his skill set.
