John Magaro knows the territory of a supporting role—it’s a world he feels comfortable in. But in ‘Past Lives,’ Magaro does career-best work in what might be the role he's been waiting for all along.
and more than a few films you’ve probably never heard of. It’s not often, he finds, that these parts are afforded three-dimensional stories. “It’s no fault of anyone—it’s just hard, you have a limited amount of time and you have to hit things,” the 40-year-old actor says. But it’s a world Magaro feels comfortable in, a type he knows how to make his own. In the brilliant new filmMagaro occupies that familiar space, but gets to play around with an uncommonly rich character.
In the A24 release, Magaro plays Arthur, a novelist and the eventual husband to our protagonist, Nora . Arthur ostensibly stays on the outside looking in for the movie’s main event: the reunion between Nora and Hae Sung , childhood friends in their native Korea who were separated when the former’s family immigrated to the US. But’s directorial debut doesn’t treat Arthur like a mere puzzle piece.
Magaro felt connected to Arthur from the moment he read the script, and saw striking parallels with his own life. “This is straight up—I’m married to a Korean American woman, we live in New York, and we’re both creative in different capacities,” Magaro says over Zoom. “[When] your partner in life is someone who is a first-generation immigrant and from a very different culture, there is this inherent feeling of being an outsider….
Arthur’s journey is told both in quiet, long close-ups and in tenderly naturalistic dialogue. Magaro had never before read a script and seen something “so close to what I was going through at the time, and still am in a way.” One wrenching scene late at night finds Arthur confessing to Nora his anxieties surrounding not just Hae Sung’s arrival in New York, but everything that it represents—the side of Nora he cannot know. There’s love and pain in every word shared between them.
“Having that space to be honest—if I had that conversation with my wife, it would just be me stumbling and tripping and not knowing what to say,” Magaro says. “But Celine is able to write it in a way that still has this natural stumbly quality that makes it honest and authentic, but it’s also poetic and heartfelt. It was like getting paid to have a therapy session.”Magaro was born and raised in Ohio before moving East to study theater.
