Looking for good news? Try this: Illinois could be a national pacesetter in media literacy.

You’ll have a hard time finding many stories about it, but the legislature last summer made Illinois the first state to require a unit of media literacy education as a prerequisite for high school graduation.

“The basic problem is self-evident,” Spikes said. “It is difficult for many of us, especially online, to discern how credible that information is. The cues we used to get, from a newspaper or a magazine, now all of these things mashed together online, and it is on the consumer to figure out how credible the information is. We need skills and tools.”

Peter Adams, a Chicago-based senior vice president of education for the News Literacy Project and a former New York City and Chicago public schoolteacher, passes on uninspiring conclusions from his group’s 2020-21 school year survey: DePaul is a Catholic school that’s luring parents chagrined with both far higher tuitions at more established private schools and the stress of the Chicago Public Schools’ selective enrollment admissions process. Powers teaches research skills and uses NewsGuard and tools provided by the Chicago Public Library, where he and school president Mary Dempsey worked for decades.
