Jesse Chavez has made the Cubs’ Opening Day roster after the team selected his contract from Triple-A Iowa on Saturday.
The 38-year-old is a multi-inning relief option for manager David Ross, which will be especially important this season as pitcher workloads are a concern across baseball following MLB's lockout.
Chavez spent last season with the World Series champion Braves, finishing with a 2.14 ERA in 30 appearances. He was even better in the postseason, allowing no runs in 6 1/3 innings. This is Chavez' second stint with the Cubs. He was a key part of their bullpen down the stretch in 2018 after the Cubs acquired him from the Rangers that July.
