Jennifer Hudson could break an Oscar record if she is nominated twice for her role in the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect. The talented Hudson is no stranger to Academy Award wins, grabbing the Best Supporting Actress award for her acting debut in the film Dreamgirls back in 2006, playing Effie White.
Hudson's latest film fully expresses her incredible talent in both acting and singing as she plays musical legend Aretha Franklin in her biopic Respect. The film is also executively produced by Hudson and stars other talented actors too such as Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Mary J. Blige and Audra McDonald. Respect details the remarkable rise that Franklin had, writing her name down in music history. Hudson was hand-selected by Franklin herself, with the film releasing in August of 2021.
Viola Davis, Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey are the only other three Black women to have been recognised in two different individual categories. In addition, if Hudson is to be nominated for both awards, it will be the third time a Black woman has received two nominations in the same ceremony, with Mary J. Blige and Cynthia Erivo being the two other Black women to do so. Not to mention, Halle Berry is the only Black woman to have won the Best Actress Academy Award.
It will be a phenomenal achievement if Hudson can grab both nominations, and even better if she goes on to win them. The fact that Berry is still the only Black woman to have earned an Oscar for Best Actress is startling, and hopefully recognition of, and even a win from, Hudson can change that. Whether the actress does achieve this record for Respect or not, Hudson will still continue to express her incredible talent in the future and write herself in the history books. .
