Jacksonville State’s Ray Harper reflects on a long-dormant, intense rivalry with Bruce Pearl
Harper often had the upper hand, his teams going 13-3 in those matchups against Pearl.
Pearl won a national title at Southern Indiana in 1995, a year after being a national runner-up. Harper won a pair of championships in 1999 and 2001 at Kentucky Wesleyan, while also making it to the title game in 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2003.“We really created something of interest to those communities,” Harper said. “… You couldn’t get a ticket. Their game at their place, you couldn’t get a ticket.
“Ray Harper has an advantage, he’s coached against me when he was at Kentucky Wesleyan, they know what we’re going to do,” Pearl said. “We were two really competitive guys, but I had the utmost respect for what he was doing and what he did,” Harper said. “For those 40 minutes, I was going to try like crazy to kick his tail, and he was going to do the same to us. When it was over, I don’t know that I respected anyone any more in that league than I did Bruce Pearl.”
