An image of a galaxy about 500 million light-years from Earth was captured by the James Webb Space Telescope. See the other images NASA has released.
On Tuesday, NASA released images from the James Webb Space Telescope of the Cartwheel Galaxy, located about 500 million light-years from Earth. The galaxy resembles a wagon wheel, NASA said, due to a high-speed collision between a large spiral galaxy and a smaller galaxy not visible in this image.
This comparison shows two images of the Southern Ring Nebula, a cloud of gas around a dying star in the constellation Vela, taken by Webb in near-infrared light, left, and mid-infrared light, right. Webb's image of a grouping of five galaxies about 290 million light-years away known as Stephan's Quintet.
