In light of DoomPatrol and Titans cancellations, James Gunn clarifies where his jurisdiction lies for making decisions for the DCU and the DC TV shows.
James Gunn clarifies the DC Universe decision-making power after inheriting several cancellations. With a new DCU on the way, the DC brand has been going through major changes over the last few months. On November 1, 2022, DC Studios was officially launched, with Gunn and Peter Safran taking charge as co-CEOs. Under their leadership, they are managing TV, film, animation, and video games tied to the DCU.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The latest news was that Titans and Doom Patrol got cancelled at HBO Max. According to reports, the cancellation was not related to the studio's massive cost-cutting decisions. But it was also not something that Gunn and Safran had anything to do with, as they were never part of Titans and Doom Patrol.
When asked on Twitter what falls within his DCU jurisdictions, Gunn helped clarify what say he and Safran have with DC. According to the filmmaker, Gunn and Safran have the option to use any character played by any performer and have them come into the DCU. However, as DC Studios co-CEOs, Gunn and Safran do not have the power to "keep any TV show running indefinitely." That ultimately falls on the networks that air said shows, whether it be The CW or HBO Max in this case.
On HBO Max, several shows that were already running and were being developed have been hit, too. Greg Berlanti's Strange Adventures was scrapped after having spent more than two years developing the anthology series. J.J. Abrams' Constantine and Madame X series lost their spots at HBO Max, which were meant to help set up the Justice League Dark universe. While they were reportedly being shopped around to other outlets, nothing has emerged in the last couple of months.
Could Characters From Cancelled DC Shows Return In The DCU? In theory, if Gunn wanted to bring back characters from cancelled DC TV shows for the DCU, there are multiple ways he could tackle that. If Gunn decided to lean into the multiverse and have DC TV characters travel from their Earths to the DCU, it can continue following the particular incarnations of said DC character. Another option is to simply have actors come in as the DCU iterations of their characters.
