James Cameron's Avatar sequels all have one common problem that needs to be fixed in the franchise's upcoming movies or risk ruining the core concept.

James Cameron's Avatar universe is destined to stay relevant, but the sequels all share one growing problem that sets them apart from the original. Set to comprise five movies spanning over two decades, Cameron's ambitious project requires each sequel to maintain strong ties with the overarching story world while providing new elements that keep it interesting.

Despite a thirteen-year wait and repeatedly belated release, Avatar: The Way of Water was a massive box-office success, which illustrates the series' potential. The second chapter deals with Jake Sully's new life as chief of the Omatikaya clan and father of Neytiri's children and provides an immersive viewing experience, with Pandora functioning once again as a beautiful backdrop for the introduction of previously unexplored territories and a new clan of Na'vi.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Avatar's Main 'Avatar' Concept Is Becoming Irrelevant The key concept of the first Avatar, which revolves around humans remotely controlling artificially generated bodies that host their consciousness, seems to be growing less important in the story.

While this shift in focus is functional to the goal of deepening the fictional world's traits, as it allows for an exploration of Pandora's fifteen Na'vi clans and their different cultures, it also poses a threat to Avatar's conceptual consistency as a franchise.

The re-introduction of the Avatar concept would also fit consistently and enhance the franchise's appeal. As much as he is now a Na'vi through and through, Jake has lived as a human being for most of his life, and disregarding this aspect completely in future installments would be unreasonable. Moreover, the series would likely benefit from this addition.
