'Once we found out... we were pumped.' The JaxIcemen didn't expect to begin the playoffs at home, but now they're ready to thrill the home crowd for the ECHL's KellyCup.
Normally, Kelly Cup playoff schedules operate with a 2-3-2 format — two games at the home of the higher seed, three at the lower seed and then the last two at the higher seed. This time, because Atlanta's Gas South Arena is fully booked thanks to Disney on Ice and a Christian ministry conference, the ECHL had no available home dates for the No. 2 seed during the entire opening week.
The matchup hasn't been an easy one for the Icemen this season , but to head coach Nick Luukko, the Icemen and Gladiators have plenty in common. "It's going to be a lot of gritty goals, a lot of gritty chances, and that's what we're going to have to do," Nazarian said. "These are the best fans in the league, and they definitely push us over the top each game," Martin said."Each game like [Saturday night] is incredible. They're so loud, it fires us up every game and playing in front of them definitely gives us that needed boost."
"We have a lot of guys who haven't played in the playoffs before," Nazarian said,"so we're all fired up and we're ready to go."
