Vance is keeping close with the rest of the Ohio Republican ticket, while Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan is mostly charting his own course in the final days of the state’s U.S. Senate race.
Like other Republicans, Vance is framing the race as a simple referendum on Democratic President Joe Biden, whose administration has presided over rising levels of inflation and concerns about public disorder. “I want to be part of a coalition of people to take the temperature down in Washington and start having conversations,” Ryan told reporters Saturday.
The event, hosted by Columbus Democratic U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty, was billed as a “souls to the polls” effort to get out the vote. Early-voting data for Black and other urban voters, or voting at lower levels overall than they did in 2018. Democrats have pointed to National Republicans’ continued ad spending, and President Donald Trump’s looming visit to Dayton on Monday -- as well as his Friday interview with Cleveland radio station WTAM -- as signs the race might be closer than it appears.
“I think there’s going to be a lot of pollsters who [are] going to have egg on their face, because their modeling is going to be off again,” Ryan said.In Toledo, Vance appeared with J.R. Majewski, a hard-right, pro-Trump Republican and first-time candidate whose campaign has been partially derailed by media reports that he exaggerated his military experience.
