This recent study, called VITAL, involved more than 25,800 participants, including more than 13,000 women. Participants were either given vitamin D at a dose of 2,000 international units or aVITAL was funded by the federal government after the U.S. Institute of Medicine reported that vitamin D supplements did reduce the risk of cancer death by 15 percent. The review included 52 randomized-controlled trials with a total of more than 75,400 participants.
