It will be up to Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. to recommend whether or not the Philippines should continue its membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), according to Senate President Vicente Sotto III.

For Sotto, Locsin was in the best position to assess if it would still be beneficial to be a part of the United Nations body after it adopted last week the Iceland-initiated resolution, seeking a comprehensive report on the human rights situation in the country.

“In any parliament, 18 in favor, [14] against and 15 abstained means the motion is lost! Paanong approved yun Iceland reso ?” he posted on Twitter Saturday. Members of the HRC are elected, and they serve for a period of three years. The Philippines won a seat in the council in October 2018. Its membership will expire in 2021.
