Set in the 1960s, the movie concerned a group of San Fernando Valley youngsters coming together to form their own sandlot baseball team, and experiencing a series of coming-of-age adventures over the course of a summer.

So I was the last one cast. It was kind of a wild casting process. They originally were going to cast this movie with six- and seven-year-olds, but they were too young. And they actually cast a whole team of six- and seven-year-olds. Six and seven and eight, but it was too young for all this stuff we were saying. It felt wrong, it felt weird. So then they recast it. I was the last one.
The Sandlot Would Have Been A Disaster With Younger Kids While The Sandlot is far from being vulgar, it does feature several memorable moments that cross the line well into PG territory. The most memorable such scene of course is the one where the awkward young kid nicknamed Squints lures the town pool’s attractive older lifeguard Wendy Peffercorn into giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Another sequence everyone remembers from The Sandlot is one where the kids decide to try out chewing tobacco right before going on a ride at the fair, and predictably get sick. With 12-year-olds, the scene strikes the right cautionary note, but with kids under ten it would have felt truly wrong.
