Toyota has an 86 refresh program now, but OEM and aftermarket performance parts can save you almost half the cost if you're DIY savvy.
Earlier this week, the Japanese Kinto factory officially kicked off Toyota's 86 Refresh Service which involves some cleaning of the engine as well as replacing some key suspension and braking components. This is offered in an effort to keep the sporty, affordable coupe on the road for years to come and maintain its original level of driver feel, safety, and performance. The new program will soon spread to GR Garage stores in Osaka, Tokyo, Aichi, and Shizuoka, and eventually go nationwide.
Online, a caliper rebuild kit from Toyota is about $40, and you'll need two of them to restore the fronts, though you can probably find them cheaper if you dig a little deeper. Project Mu NS brake pads retail for about $130 per side and their slotted rotors about $300 per pair. At $640, dirtying your hands saves you around $250—more if you bargain shop for better deals and you end up with superior braking power.For $878, Toyota will update the 86's bushings.
