The Tony winner's new musical, 'Noir,'; had its world premiere this month at the Alley Theatre and runs through July 2.

Duncan Sheik might now feel more comfortable offstage. But the Tony winner has always been a theater fan. In fact, he enjoyed an elementary school run as a leading man.

His interests then turned to the guitar and rock music, which led to a run on Top 40 radio. But Sheik still recalls several pivotal theater moments. Jarrow first brought up the idea of film noir in 2010. He previously worked with Sheik on the musical “Whisper House.” They began fleshing it out in 2013 through workshops. Rachel Chavkin, Tony-winning director of “Hadestown,” was originally attached to direct. “Noir” is now being directed by Darko Tresnjak, also a Tony winner for “A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder.”

The challenge for Sheik was coming up with original songs that worked within a genre that doesn’t have an easy definition. Essential noir elements include an anti-hero protagonist, a femme fatale, a complex narrative and an air of cynicism. “Double Indemnity” and “The Maltese Falcon” are classic examples; “Mulholland Drive” and “Seven” are more contemporary takes.“You don’t necessarily have to be doing the storytelling through the music the way you might otherwise do a musical.
