Karla Torres, 18, is one of five finalists selected for the duct tape prom dress competition for her 18th century-style gown. The first-generation, college-bound teen is hoping to win the $10,000 scholarship prize.
“We’ve never made a dress, much less out of duct tape,” Torres, 18, said. “We didn’t know how much duct tape we needed. It’s such a random thing … we were just doing it by trial and error.”
“Tape is so rigid and you can’t move it like fabric,” Torres said. “It was really challenging making it all come together.” . Her parents are helping spread the word too, telling their friends and extended family about the contest.A growing share of low-income students admitted to the renowned University of California system are choosing community college instead as skyrocketing housing costs and insufficient financial aid put their dream campuses out of reach.
