Where can you find the best value for your money? We checked prices for 20 typical items at eight grocery chains to see which stores save you the most.
Still, your grocery bill depends on where you shop, and among the top chains across the Columbus area, consumers will find a lot of differences in the cost of a loaf of bread or a carton of eggs.
If a certain item wasn't in stock, we tried to get the next best thing available. For example, when looking for a 19-ounce package of Johnsonville Brats, we included Giant Eagle's 14-ounce package, store brands at Fresh Thyme and Whole Foods and generic brands of bratwursts at Aldi and Save-a-Lot. Walmart, Meijer, Giant Eagle or Kroger might be your choice if you want to get everything in one trip, including standard brand names, but may lack the variety of vegan, gluten-free or other specialty products that you can find at Whole Foods or Fresh Thyme, or the low prices found at Aldi.Our experiment also did not include membership stores such as Costco or Sam's Club, or international grocery stores, both of which can often offer terrific deals for cost-conscious shoppers.
