The Indiana Supreme Court has announced it will take jurisdiction over a lawsuit that put a temporary hold to the state's near-total abortion ban.

Planned Parenthood and abortion providers challenged the law in Monroe County court with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana. When reviewing that lawsuit, Special Judge Kelsey B. Hanlon, a Republican, wrote in her temporary injunction order that there was"a reasonable likelihood" that decisions about family planning ― including the decision to carry a pregnancy to term ― are protected by Indiana's Constitution.

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita appealed the decision. The Indiana Supreme Court announced Wednesday it had agreed to take over the case after Rokita’s office argued the lawsuit, and the lower court's decision, have massive implications for the state. Both sides in the lawsuit are scheduled to make their oral arguments in front of the court in January.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana is part of another active lawsuit in Marion County court challenging the ban on the grounds that it violates Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act. The Satanic Temple has also sued Indiana over the restrictions by claiming it contravenes religious freedoms.
