In the scheme of things, a $5,000 grant may not seem like a ton of money, but in Monterey Park you’ll find businesses such as the Wu family’s still struggling to emerge from two major shocks: the pandemic and the mass shooting. The check presentation, which drew representatives from SoCalGas, the foundation and city officials, was a glimpse yet again of a Monterey Park business community still emerging from the economic toll of the mass shooting on Jan. 21, and the remnants of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Thursday, the memory of that day was close. Gone were the big pictures of the faces of the victims posted in the archways just outside of the Garvey Avenue dance studio. But the noodle business is right next door, in the same complex as the studio,“We served a lot of dancers,” Zhen Wu said. “That was a good part of our customers. With them not reopening, that definitely affected us.”
It’s that same kind of hope — and perseverance — that led to opening the business in the first place.
