The group has been named a Pets for Life Mentorship Partner in the program for underserved areas supported by the national Humane Society.
This program prioritizes keeping families together by distributing free-to-owner pet care, food and other supplies and resources to pet owners in specific Oakland neighborhoods. The service model of the Pets for Life program incorporates strategic door-to-door outreach, builds a consistent community presence and cultivates long-lasting relationships with pet owners. This program is supported by The Humane Society of the United States.
Driven by social justice, the Pets for Life philosophy recognizes that a deep connection with pets transcends socioeconomic, racial, ethnic and geographic boundaries and that no one should be denied the opportunity to experience the benefits and joy that come from the human-animal bond. County residents, including those not serviced by WM, can bring mattresses and box springs to WM’s Davis Street facility from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. This free drop-off is made possible through the Mattress Recycling Council’s Bye Bye Mattress program.
Mattresses disposed of through the Bye Bye Mattress program are disassembled and recycled. The steel, foam, fiber and wood recovered from mattresses and box springs are sent to manufacturers to make hundreds of new products such as carpet padding, construction rebar, insulation, filters and mulch. The program is funded through a $10.50 recycling fee that is collected when a mattress or box spring is purchased in California.
