In a high-penalty performance, Cowboys defense fails to contain 49ers’ run game | calvinwatkins
In the Cowboys’ 23-17 season-ending loss to the 49ers, the defense was as much to blame as the slow-starting offense.
It’s no surprise the 49ers tried to establish the running game. The 49ers rushed for 169 yards, as rookie running back Elijah Mitchell rushed for 96 yards and one touchdown on 27 carries. Deebo Samuel, the do-everything wide receiver/running back, combined for 110 yards from scrimmage, including a killer touchdown run in the third quarter.
The defense got the Cowboys back in the game. But penalties, some questionable, were another example of how undisciplined they were. The defense committed six of the franchise playoff high 14 penalties. With the 49ers ahead 23-17 with eight minutes left, they were trying to work the clock by running the ball. But defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa was called for defensive holding on a 5-yard run by Mitchell. A third-down penalty on defensive tackle Neville Gallimore, on which he pushed the helmet off center Alex Mack, gave the 49ers a first down with 4:36 left.
With the fans throwing trash onto the field once the game ended, forcing Lawrence to block some cups with his helmet, more was expected from this defense.
