Coach says loss to Ross Branson doesn't take away from 'incredible' season
The CIF state championship Division IV girls’ basketball final at Golden 1 Center on Saturday morning started well for Imperial High. The Tigers were tied with Ross Branson 8-8 after the first quarter.
The second quarter, however, produced eight minutes of frustration and disappointment. The Tigers went scoreless and fell behind 22-8. The halftime statistics showed 4 of 23 shooting, including 0 for 5 from three-point range. Coach Rich Ponchione went to the locker room searching for a positive response.
In the third quarter, the drought continued. It reached a 24-0 scoring run for Branson and a 32-8 deficit for Imperial until Xiomara Cardona finally made a basket with 3:39 left in the quarter. Branson went on to win its third state championship with a 46-23 victory. The loss didn’t take away from the once-in-a-lifetime experience for Imperial players, some of whom got to have their first ever ride on an airplane to Sacramento.“It was an incredible season,” Ponchione said. “We made history. We’re just so proud of them.”
Hannah Golan led Branson with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Junior Sierra Morris had 11 points and eight rebounds for Imperial, which returns most of its top players from a 28-7 team.
