A volcano erupted in southwest Iceland, near the capital Reykjavik, following intense earthquake activity in the area. Images and videos showed lava and smoke emanating from the side of a mountain

The eruption has decreased considerably, the Icelandic Met Office, Vedur, said on Tuesday, adding people should keep out of the restricted eruption site.

Hjordis Gudmundsdottir, a spokesperson at the department of civil protection and emergency management, said while it wasn't dangerous to be outside, the situation was unpredictable and children should not be allowed near the area even when restrictions are eventually lifted. The Met Office had earlier warned of high gas pollution around the eruption, from which lava is flowing, but said there was no ash.
