Alfredo Martinez-Contreras, one of two men charged with capital murder of a police officer in the killing of a SAISD detective who was run over in an IHOP parking lot in 2019, took a plea deal for a reduced charge of assault of a peace officer.
Alfredo Martinez-Contreras is escorted Monday, April 24, 2023, out of the 226th District Court in the Cadena-Reeves Criminal Justice Center after he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his part in the killing of SAISD police officer Clifton “Cliff” Martinez. Martinez-Contreras reached a plea deal reducing his original charge of capitol murder of a police officer to assault of a peace officer causing bodily injury.
Martinez, a longtime law enforcer, also had worked for the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. He was working an after-hours security job at the 24-hour restaurant on Hot Wells Boulevard when a fight broke out around 3:40 a.m. on Dec. 21, 2019. Reports state that two men had gotten into a fight inside the restaurant, and Martinez and another man intervened to break it up.
Martinez-Contreras pushed the officer to the ground and ran to a nearby car with other passengers. The vehicle. Onlookers watched in horror and pleaded with the driver to stop as the car backed over Martinez again, the affidavit stated.
