'If they would just simply give an apology, showing they care, that would have meant a lot to me,” Michael Jennings said about Childersburg officials.

Jennings, the pastor of Vision of Abundant Life Ministries in Sylacauga, says he’s the latest in a long line of Black people who’ve been callously and needlessly arrested by law enforcement officials who’ve accosted them during ordinary activities.

The lawsuit also says Jennings suffered emotional and psychological distress during the arrest and its aftermath, resulting in PTSD symptoms such as anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, nightmares and flashbacks. Jennings identified himself as “Pastor Jennings” but refused to provide identification to the officers, who arrested him on a charge of obstructing government operations after a 20-minute confrontation that included raised voices on both sides.

“Once I turned to go back to water the flowers, he told me, ‘If you leave, I’m going to arrest you.’ .. I walked around, they grabbed me, secured me, put the handcuffs on me, made me feel like I was a slave. I felt like I was being kidnapped. They took my phone, with all of my personal information on it. That hurt me.
