The 21-year-old former UC Davis student accused of killing two men and wounding a woman in a series of brutal stabbing attacks in April made an unusual appearance in court Monday.

Carlos Dominguez and his defense attorney appeared to be at odds in a 10-minute hearing in Yolo County Superior Court. Dominguez, with hands in cuffs and curly dark hair obscuring his face, repeatedly interrupted his public defender, Daniel Hutchinson, as Hutchinson told the judge that his client was “not mentally competent” to stand trial. Hutchinson requested the proceedings be suspended.

Judge Samuel McAdam ruled that the case is suspended until Dominguez’s mental competence is determined through a psychiatric assessment. Dominguez is charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder in connection with a week of attacks in April that. The first killing happened the morning of April 27. David Henry Breaux, 50, a well-liked figure known as the “Compassion Guy,” was found dead on the bench in Central Park where he sat and often slept. Kari Peterson, a close friend of Breaux, attended the Monday hearing.

“I just keep hearing David say, ‘You got to look at things through the lens of compassion,’” Peterson told press outside the courthouse, theThe second killing occurred April 29. A resident reported a scuffle in Sycamore Park, about 2.5 miles from the first stabbing. First responders were unable to resuscitate the man who had suffered multiple stab wounds and died at the scene. The victim was identified by police as Karim Abou Najm, 20, a senior computer science major at UC Davis.

The third stabbing in five days occurred late on May 1 at a homeless camp near Second Street. Kimberlee Guillory, 64, was stabbed in her tent and is expected to make a full recovery as the sole survivor of the attacks,
