Ain't No Mo' is Broadway's Most Important New Play

What if, in an effort to end racism in America, the U.S. government gave every Black citizen descended from slaves a one-way ticket to Africa? This question is at the center of, the formidable new play starring and written by 27-year-old Jordan E. Cooper that made its Broadway premiere on December 1.

The opening scene takes place on November 4, 2008, the day Barack Obama was elected president, and is set at the funeral of Brother Righttocomplain, who represents centuries of warranted Black grievance. With a Black man in the highest office, it seems he can finally be laid to rest—except, as we soon discover, Obama’s presidency results in little respite.

The rest of the play takes place after the election of President Trump and features self-contained vignettes that explore fraught topics like the prison industrial complex, classism, the tension between queerness and Blackness, the appropriation of Black culture, and more.

I wanted people who don't necessarily always feel welcome in those theater spaces to know the moment they walk in that it’s for them too.at age 23, which is incredible. What there a specific experience that compelled you to first start conceptualizing the play?: It was really watching all the murders of unarmed Black men and women around the country that were happening at what seemed like to be at the same time.
