8 A.M. HURRICANE IAN UPDATE: The NHC says additional rapid strengthening is expected today, and Ian is forecast to become a major hurricane tonight.
The track of Ian has shifted slightly back west. The models still hint at Ian taking a similar track moving in on the Big Bend region along the Gulf. This continues to put distance between Jacksonville and the hurricane.Ian is expected to reach Category 4 strength in the Gulf.Increasing landfall risk farther north of Tampa Bay as a weaker hurricane, with some potential to shift toward the Panhandle.At 8 a.m., the center of Hurricane Ian was located near latitude 18.7 North, longitude 82.4 West.
Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph with higher gusts. Rapid strengthening is expected during the next day or so, and Ian is forecast to become a major hurricane tonight when it is near western Cuba. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90miles .
The estimated minimum central pressure is 981 mb based on dropsonde data from the NOAA and Air Force Hurricane Hunters.
