“I was able to sit on the ground and have them crawl on my lap,” a rescuer said. “I’ve never seen a sewer rat do something like that.”

So far, two of the rats Pascoe rescued have found homes, but all the others still need homes, she said. What’s most needed now is support for the people who have organized to rescue the rats, Pascoe said. Foster and adoptive homes also are needed. She also is accepting financial donations because some of the animals need veterinary care. Pascoe said some of them need medicine for upper respiratory issues, one has a tumor and will likely need to be euthanized.
