Hundreds gather to see SF's smelliest flower bloom

A rare plant at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers bloomed on Monday night.

says. The agency points out that the population of the plant has declined more than 50% over the past 150 years with less than 1,000 flowers currently in nature.

The various smells produced by the corpse flower were on display as Scarlet bloomed on Tuesday. Some of these smells include dimethyl trisulfide, which mimics cooked onions, broccoli and cabbage. The conservatory's describes other smells such as isovaleric acid, which smells like human skin and “sweaty feet” and trimethylamine, which mimics rotting plants and animals.
