Work crews prepare to remove a whale from the beach in Long Branch, N.J. August 13, 2023The young humpback whale found dead at the Jersey Shore earlier this month was likely killed after hitting a ship or boat, the second known vessel strike to injure the animal since 2022, first responders said.
The whale was reported to the Long Branch Police Department on the afternoon of Aug. 12 and first responders spent the next day carrying out examinations before burying the marine mammal on the beach. As someone long committed to protecting our environment and now constitutionally obligated to ensure its good care, the uptick in whale deaths since 2016 is heartbreaking.
