The day of the conference was to be the first day of the trial between FOX News and Dominion Voting Systems and it was announced to the crowd of over 100 that a settlement was reached -- a fitting backdrop to the day’s panel discussions on whether the First Amendment can weather the storm of what Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa called “not misinformation but disinformation.”
I fashion myself a celebrity spotter, so my antennae go up when I’m in Manhattan. Standing outside Pulitzer Hall on the Columbia University campus recently, I was enjoying the brisk spring weather before attending a conference on the First Amendment.
And that was a perfect segue into the conference, “Resilience in Journalism and Free Speech in the Age of Social Media,” sponsored by the school’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism. The event was also a tribute to Bollinger for his support for the only Ivy League journalism school. In his introductory comments, he noted that “current events are crucial for the work we do.”
